Once again, Alan Partridge faces turmoil! However, many are in similar straits today? During his previous television outing, Alan suffered a public collapse while fronting the entertainment series This Time, ending the series quite literally locked out of the BBC. As his latest self-made endeavor begins, the non-fiction piece How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), Alan discloses he’s encountered further difficulties by passing out in front of a guest at an industry gathering for an agricultural firm. Hard moments, but such characters rebound: link personal issues to broader trends and see if you can get a series out of it.
How Are You? showcases the beloved persona in roving factual mode, looking into an epidemic of anxiety, stress and loneliness that he feels is worsening: “If I can use an outdated term, it’s just got mental!” His path includes dabbling in faith, reconnect with friends from school, and enjoy therapeutic hikes, while dealing with his past. Episode one builds towards a hostile but cathartic reunion with “Sidekick” Simon Denton (Tim Key), his old partner from past shows, and throughout the series, we’re shown unseen clips from Alan’s stints.
Alongside his co-writers and directors, How Are You? marks a change of pace. While the previous show explored new ground, How Are You? sometimes rehashes past ideas: in addition to resurrecting classic structures, the whole piece resembles the mockumentaries in recent years. And, as Alan’s private life bleeds into his investigations, viewers will think of his podcast work. The Two Sides of Alan Partridge
It creates a slight challenge. There are two Alans: Winning Alan (currently has a big paid presenting gig) and Outcast Alan (on the sidelines), and although Wilderness Alan was the star of the faultless TV sitcom I’m Alan Partridge back in 1997, a reflective version has emerged lately in books and audio projects. How Are You? places us inside the oasthouse and includes Kelly in the role of Katrina, his highly inappropriate love interest from the podcast. However, this sad story – Alan is in denial about Katrina cheating on him with an acquaintance and entrepreneur – feels like one that would have benefited from the slower pace of audio-only Alan, allowing audience creativity to enhance humor. Without visuals, he seems more free: current formats thrive on challenging the triumphant version and observing his collapse, as seen before.
The Genius of Sloppy Errors
Yet, these issues pale beside a key reality: whatever medium he inhabits, Partridge remains the funniest comic creation in Britain, and temporary versions still offer huge comedy than competing shows. How Are You? is produced and directed by Alan, as well as starring him, which highlights his talent for mistakes and bad choices. If explosive fruit edits symbolize struggles, that’s what we’re getting, and no one corrects his verbal errors or similar gaffes in narration. The slight grimace we regularly catch as he strides out of shot aware that the segment was a failure consistently amuses, and nor do the idents he’s made to fit between segments, topped by his earnest, flawed grins while drinking tea clumsily.
Visual and Emotional Highlights
Is there anything more joyous than Alan grunting as he squats down next to a skip? Surely not. He is also a visual treat, with an implausibly light hair color, and his 2025 wardrobe featuring mustard chinos, contrasting shoes, assorted vests and an enthusiastic overreaction to the news that rugby shirts are back in fashion.
Plus, the subject matter here allows for the glimpses into Alan’s soul that have been there ever since the Gibbons brothers took over co-writing duties. More than once the series pulls off flashes of pathos, where his blindness exposes pain that almost has us crying tears of emotion, then the comedy returns and laughter resumes. It succeeds because of enduring fandom: every appearance is appreciated.
