No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
